Do We Kill Creativity?

Sir Ken Robinson's February 2006 speech at TED is incredible, thought provoking, and inspiring.  For those that have not seen it, please take 25 minutes out of your day to watch.  It makes you think about how we educate our students.

As a creative, visual and "right-brained," student, artist and teacher, I agree with this lecture and the main message- that we do "kill creativity" in schools. Not everyone thinks, perceives and /or sees the same way. Parents, students and teachers all need to be more open to those of us who push the envelope, think out of the box, or who can see the big picture. Artists, designers, engineers, scientists, researchers, video game designers are examples of careers that utilize creativity. The world would be lost without them. Learning to use the creative and problem solving side of the brain along with our linear, sequential, left side of the brain is the answer. Leonardo da Vinci knew this in the 1400's. Look at what this genius was capable of creating over 600 years ago! Can you imagine what Leonardo would be capable of with today’s tools and technologies available for his experimentation? Why don't we revisit some of his ideas and philosophies? A good book on this topic is “A Whole New Mind, Why Right –Brainers Will Rule the Future,” by Daniel Pink.
